Zion : an update

Hi there dear friends. We are writing this blog post together – currently ash is holding beautiful Zion on her chest as is common these days. Zion, as it turns out, LOVES this and he’s resting deeply and comfortably.

What was once a big time unknown situation has swiftly turned into a tale of Gods abounding grace and mercy.

Here’s a brief medical recap of our boy:
Zion was 3 pounds 5 ounces just 2 weeks and 3 days ago. Today, he’s weighing in at 4 pounds 14 ounces.

He was in an incubator in the NICU when we first met him. He is now in a crib and has been moved out of the NICU.

He was on 2 liters of oxygen flow through a nasal canula when we first met him. He now is breathing 100% on his own.

He was fed through a feeding tube when we first met. Now he is taking bottles primarily, and eating like a champ.

All of zion’s behaviors are better than normal for a preemie at 35 weeks. Remarkable.

And here is more of what is unfolding: he has been diagnosed with a condition called hydrocephalus in which his brain is releasing fluid that gathers in his head. He has a reservoir placed in his head under the skin thar gathers that fluid, which doctors then tap with a needle and drain. The next step is an additional surgery to place a shunt in his head – a self draining system by which he wouldn’t need to be tapped by needles anymore. That surgery is currently scheduled for Tuesday this week.

And here’s where the story deepens. Zion had traditionally been tapped by needle every 2 days. But, as of today, it has been 9 days since he was last tapped!!!!!!!! His head feels good, and ultrasounds are revealing that there, indeed, may not be a need for surgery this week! A surgical nurse remarked to Ashley that they do not believe he needs the surgery at this time.

Hydrocephalus was a condition we were preparing to deal with for life. But could the healing hand of God have removed the condition?

We are rejoicing in the healthy condition of our baby boy. We will meet with the neurosurgeon tomorrow who will decide to either proceed with the surgery or to wait and see. We of course are praying that we will just wait and see and that the disease will completely be a non-issue for the rest of his life.

Will you join us in praying for complete healing, for wisdom, and that our baby will be home in July??

Rosina I saw this on twitter yesterday and it just fits this update so perfectly:

God has infinite attention to spare for each one of us. You are as much alone with Him as if you were the only being He had ever created.
